Gourds are an annual plant and need a long growing season. They are vines and grow well on a trellis as they are at Sunrock Farm. After harvesting they are placed in a covered area and left alone for a year to allow their insides to rot. The outside skin gets covered with mold which adds to the beauty of the gourd when it dries out.

Gourds are a natural resource that has been considered a staple in many societies. They are one of the first plants to be cultivated throughout the world and have been in use for thousands of years. The gourd is the only plant that experts believe to have spanned the entire globe.
