This hollow gourd can become many things for many different people. For the past 10,000 years gourds have been used for utilitarian, recreational, artistic, and even religious purposes. The first use of gourds appears to have been as floats for fishing nets.

In the distant past people did not have metal, plastic, glass, or other modern materials for plates, glasses, cups, and containers to carry food and liquid. Instead people made use of gourds that they grew themselves.
