Historically cattle were used for farm labor thousands of years before horses were used. Cattle were much stronger than horses and could be fitted with a yoke to pull things whereas horses cannot use a yoke and could only pull light loads like a chariot. Large horses were only developed in the Middle Ages (to hold knights with heavy armor) and the horse collar was developed also in the Middle Ages (first by the Vikings) to enable horses to do heavy pulling. |
