The Bible says that the first thing Noah did after leaving the Ark was to plant a vineyard. The first domestic grapes can be traced to Iran about 8,000 ago. The ancient people ate grapes and also made them into wine and vinegar.

Wine was used in early Christian assemblies and when the early monks gathered together in groups they needed vineyards to maintain a supply of religious wine. As monasteries spread across Europe and later the world so did the number of vineyards. Eventually other farmers grew grapes in vineyards.
